Center MLK Parade Indicates Positive Change in Race Relations

Some Center area residents say a celebration like Monday's MLK parade would not have been possible thirty years ago.

"This has changed so much in the past 20, 25, 30 years. You would not see anything like this happen 25 years ago. I think it's a good thing, people need to realize that the world changes, we all need to make changes as it changes," said local resident Sean Permenter.

City Councilwoman Rubye L. Biggers says although things have improved over the past 40 years, it takes effort by more than one race to keep the progress going.

"There's a lot of work to be done by each race, for one can't put any more on the other than he puts on himself," said Biggers.

Monday's celebration in Center not only served to demonstrate that race relations have improved, it also gives East Texans hope that they will continue to improve with each generation.
