"It's the secret recipe," said Dolli Geyerman.

That's what Old Town General Store owner, Dolli Geyerman says brings people into her store for a cup of wassail.

"Our wassail, people like. It's tasty. It's different. We do put a little chocolate in the wassail," said Geyerman.

She says this is her 4th year participating in the competition, which started a little over 11 years ago. Each year, stores compete for "the people's favorite" wassail. This year, she and her fans hope to win.

"Not just because she's my mom, because it tastes really good," said daughter, Ella Geyerman.

Competition is just a few doors down, as Gerry Larabee hopes to defend her title of reigning champ. Larabee says it's all in the ingredients she uses.

"We sell a mulling spice that we use, and that's our base. And then every year, we just kind of tweak it and move on up a different flavor with it," said Heart of Texas store owner, Gerry Larabee.

Win or lose, store owners enjoy the festive atmosphere the competition brings.

"It just really brings the downtown community alive and lets people try something different that they've never had," said Geyerman.

Even in spite of the grey skies hanging overhead.

"Perfect wassail weather. It's nice and cold for a cup of hot apple cider," said Geyerman.

Larabee says the event attracts hundreds through her store each year.

"We try to count our cups that we serve, and there's a lot of people that come out. This exactly is the event that does bring people into the store. We don't have competition with vendors setting out in the street," said Larabee.

Geyerman says she looks forward to competing each year.
