Officers respond to a call of a combative hospital patient

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Trinity man is under investigation after arriving at the Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and fighting staff.

According to the police report, officers were dispatched to the Memorial Hospital Emergency Room around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. Officers were told there was a combative patient fighting with staff. The staff reported that Derick Deshun Sterling, 21, of Trinity walked into the hospital through the front entrance and told staff he had a fight with his girlfriend. He also told staff he'd taken something.

Staff told the police that Starling collapsed on the way to the Emergency Room. By the time he was taken to the trauma room, he became incoherent and began fighting with staff trying to help him.

Starling's violent reactions are reported to be consistent with a drug overdose.  The investigating officer reported Starling lost consciousness, and then they found that Starling was also bleeding from a wound to his chest.

Very limited information is further available at the time. Detectives will continue following up on the case.
