ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office arrested a Lufkin man after authorities say he shot a dog while riding a horse on FM 2021 Thursday afternoon.

Investigator Davy Hill said Antonio Dewayne Garrett, 40, was riding a horse on FM 2021 when a dog ran toward him. Hill said Garrett pulled out a pistol and shot the dog, killing it.

A witness called the incident in to the sheriff's office and deputies determined Garrett should be charged with a felony charge of cruelty to animals. He also received a citation for discharging a firearm on a public road.

Hill said Garrett denied having a gun, much less shooting the dog.

He is being held without bail at the Angelina County Jail.
