Prison Hostage Standoff Enters Third Week

An Arizona prison guard is thought to be holding up well after two weeks as a hostage.

Negotiators are still trying obtain her release from a guard tower inside the Arizona State Prison Complex-Lewis.

Officials heard her voice yesterday during a telephone check monitored by health professionals. They say she was alert and mobile.

One of the two hostage takers walked on the roof of the tower yesterday carrying what appeared to be a shotgun or rifle. The inmate swung the weapon but never aimed it during the short time he walked on the roof.

It was the first time that either of the inmates had shown a weapon.

The standoff at the prison west of Phoenix began January 18th. A male guard who was also taken hostage was released January 24th.
