Van Zandt Co. shootings leave one child dead, another clinging to life

By Jamey Boyum

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -  According to Van Zandt county Sheriff Pat Burnett, a five-year old child was accidentally shot on Saturday in the Callender Lake area on Saturday at around 5:00 p.m. The shooting is said to have happened outside his home, and it is unclear whether he shot himself or was shot by someone else.

His parents took him to a local convenience store to gain enough cell phone signal to call 911, apparently, but before help came, the child was deceased. The gun was a legally registered weapon; no arrests have been made at this time.

The second shooting was, apparently, also accidental. It happened in rural northern Van Zandt County on Sunday at around noon.

Three young boys were playing with pellet guns, and one of them was unintentionally shot in the forehead.

The child, aged 10 years, was transported to a Dallas hospital. He was conscious and responsive this morning.
