SFA buys up web addresses reserved for porn

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

There's a dash to buy-up XXX web addresses normally reserved for the porn industry.

"I would probably register a .XXX quite a bit quicker than I would register a .tv, or a .mobi," DP Solutions President Bruce Love said.

Love's company has a web hosting, Internet solution provider service that helps clients with domain registration.

"When somebody comes to us, they generally register the dot com domain, registration on the Internet," Love said.

Internet regulators recently came up with .XXX to make porn sites easier to identify.

Now, Stephen F. Austin State University has bought sfasu.xxx along with sfalumberjacks.xxx and sfaladyjacks.xxx.

Texas A&M has bought up 15 .XXX domain names to keep the porn industry from associating itself with various Aggie trademarks.

The University of Texas at Austin also blocked about a dozen names.

However, should businesses and even individuals follow suit?

"If you want to protect your real estate on the Internet, then that's a wise idea, but it's also just another $12, $13 a year you have to pay for domains," Love said. "I would say peace of mind would be a good reason to do it, but what we find is that people register a domain that's very similar to a company name, but not used by that company."

Although the intent, in part, is to help parents protect their kids from viewing adult content, Love isn't sure this will be the answer.

"I think it's a nice effort, but it'll be years perhaps a decade before the traffic shifts and then there's still going to be the opportunity to trap traffic that wasn't intended to be inappropriate to begin with," Love said.

He said it's more a challenge to make sure any identification of your name is registered since some adult sites will continue to be available as regular old .coms.
