NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack head football coach Mike Santiago announced today the signing of 16 high school seniors to national letters of intent to play football and continue their education at SFA next fall. Those student-athletes will join three transfers and one early graduate already on campus for the Lumberjacks.
The 2004 class features 10 defensive players, nine offensive players and one that could play on either side of the ball. Six student-athletes from the East Texas area also signed with the 'Jacks today.
"Beginning last May, our coaches did a great job of identifying, evaluating and recruiting these players. We feel that we have signed a good class of athletes in that there were still five or six players on our board we would have liked to sign, but didn't have the scholarships to offer," Santiago said.
Among the 17 high school student-athletes that will join the Lumberjack football program in 2004, five come from state championship teams and 11 helped lead their teams to playoff appearances in 2003.
Santiago added that the 'Jacks have addressed needs in several areas with this year's class. "We were able to address needs in the defensive secondary, at running back and at linebacker with the young men we were able to sign today. I've been asked to pick the best player in this class, but I can't because there are so many quality players at each position. This class is also balanced with good players on each side of the ball," said the fifth year head coach.
"There could be several of these players that could make an immediate impact with us next year. Not only did we sign quality players, but we have also been able to add quality people to this program," said Santiago.
Three transfer student athletes including Derek Farmer, a running back from Texas A&M, and junior college transfers Jerry Little, an offensive lineman from Tyler Junior College and James Shead, a defensive back from Kilgore College joined the Lumberjack program when classes began in January. They were also joined by Jonathan 'Bug' Aymond, an early graduate of Houston North Shore High School at the university last month. All will go through workouts with SFA later this spring.
