Woman adopts Lufkin cat left for dead

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin cat zipped up in a backpack, thrown in a Lufkin pond, and left for dead has been adopted.

A Lufkin woman came into the Kurth Memorial Animal Shelter Thursday afternoon to fill out the adoption papers.

She said she saw the story on KTRE's Facebook page and found out the cat still had not been adopted.

The cat was found two weeks ago in the VFW pond off Ford Chapel Road.

Authorities think it was a cruel joke, but they have not made an arrest yet in the case.

Animal control was not sure the cat would make it, but he did and now he'll be home for Christmas.

"This is great," said Wendy Thomas, who is adopting the cat. "I'm just glad that I was the one that could get him."

Thomas has three children, so she's not sure if Sosimo's name, Spanish for survivor, will stick.

She plans to pick him up Saturday.
