GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in the death of his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter in Glendale.

A Maricopa County court spokesperson said Miguel Angel Garcia, 24, was also sentenced to lifetime probation Friday morning.

Garcia pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted child abuse.

Records show Garcia was babysitting his girlfriend's four children, ages 1 to 6, while the children's mother was at work on Dec. 11, 2011.

Those records also said that the baby was crying and Garcia admitted that he wrapped her in a blanket and put her face down inside of a closet. Initial reports show it was for approximately five minutes.

The child was found not breathing at the Heatherbrae Apartments in Glendale near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Other children in the home interviewed said they were told not to open the door and not to let her out, according to the police report. The report also said that Garcia told police when he went to check on the child, she was unresponsive.

A neighbor told CBS 5 News that Garcia ran the baby to her apartment shortly after he discovered the child was not breathing.

"The only thing he told me was that he found her under a blanket," said Caryll Marcello. "All Angel said to me was, 'I need help, my baby's not breathing.' So I told him to come inside my house and we laid the baby on the couch and I called 911 and we started performing CPR."

The baby did not survive.

"I tried my best to help them. I tried my best to save the baby, but the ambulance got there and they said there was nothing that they could do," Marcello said.
