BROADDUS, TX (KTRE) – Fire investigators in Broaddus say they are still looking into the cause of a house fire in which three children died nearly two weeks ago.
The San Augustine County sheriff's office has handed the case over to the State Fire Marshal's office. The state has processed the scene, but say it could be weeks before the report is finished.
A preliminary investigation indicated the fire started near the kitchen while the family slept. The State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause and origin of the flames. The sheriff's office says there is no indication that the blaze was anything other than a terrible accident. Investigators are also awaiting results of an autopsy on the children who perished in the fire. That autopsy is expected to confirm the children, Austin McGee, 9, Brandon Rieter, 6, and Shaina Rieter, 4, died of smoke inhalation.
Investigators say the father pulled all three children out of the house and an EMT tried in vain to revive them.
