Texas teen with rare heart condition inspires millions before death

AUSTIN, TX (KXAN/CNN) -

A Texas teen with a rare heart condition died on Christmas day. Ben Breedlove didn't let the disease slow him down and he was an inspiration to his friends and family.

Ben Breedlove was born with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopahty. A disease of the heart muscle most people couldn't tell he had, even when it showed.

"He was crossing the street at school one time and he just dropped in the middle of the street from his heart condition and his friends helped him up and he just kept going and they laughed about it. He didn't take it overly seriously he went with it," says Shawn Breedlove, Ben's father.

Doctors didn't expect ben to live past his early teens. The 18-year-old had a pacemaker put in two years ago. It gave him more energy, helped regulate his heart and stretch his limits. Allowing him to spend more time on the lake, travel to Alaska with his grandparents, and start making YouTube videos.

But there were signs his condition was getting worse.

"Ben really wanted to be free from not being able to do some things and recently he was getting more tired and less able to do the things he would like to do," says Deanne Breedlove, Ben's mother.

About a week before his death, his parents knew he was ready to go

"He had talked to us in person about being comforted by God and having experienced the peace of God and not being afraid of his heart condition or ultimately passing away," says Deanne Breedlove.

"Last week he prayed for us that we wouldn't be scared or sad and we would have the same peace he felt and now we're just remembering the joy he gave to the world," says Ally Breedlove, Ben's sister.

Ben's funeral took place in Austin on Thursday.
