Downtown Lufkin fire draws attention, causes little damage

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A fire in downtown Lufkin caused quite a stir, but ended up being simple work for firefighters Tuesday afternoon.

The owner of a business at 204 North Third St. was burning limbs and leaves in a burn barrel by his business when he left it to die for about 15 minutes.

Fire department spokesman Steve McCool said the culvert, some plastic, debris and tires caught on fire, causing a large smoke cloud over downtown around 1 p.m.

A neighbor called 911 around 1 p.m. and firefighters managed to put out the fire quickly.

The fire caused damage to some lawn equipment and an eave of the building.
