Lufkin Police arrested a former employee of the gift shop at the Lufkin zoo after she reportedly admitted to stealing more than $14,000 from her employer.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the investigation began in August when the director at Ellen Trout Zoo, Gordon Henley, contacted police in reference to a theft.

Henley reported that an employee of the zoo's gift shop, Rita Darlene Cambiano, 53, of Diboll, came to him and confessed to stealing money from the shop. Henley said one of her duties was to make deposits for the zoo and she said she had simply not been making the deposits and had been keeping the money.

Henley said he reported the confession to board members who decided to terminate Cambiano and take legal action against her.

According to the affidavit, the detective received enough documentation and even a confession from Cambiano to obtain a warrant for her arrest.

Cambiano turned herself in to the Angelina County Jail on Tuesday on a charge of theft, a state jail felony. She was released on a $2,500 bond.
