NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior punter Drew Nelson has been named to the 2011 FCS Athletic Directors Association Academic (ADA) All-Star team announced ADA officials Tuesday afternoon. Nelson was one of 58 players at the NCAA FCS level to be named to the 14th annual team.
A two-time second-team All-Southland Conference selection, Nelson has been one of the nation's top punters over the course of his four years in Nacogdoches. The Livingston, Texas, native averaged better than 41 yards per punt during his four-year career. He was recognized on the league's all-conference teams all four seasons.
A two-time academic all-star selection, and the 2010 Academic All-SLC selection, Nelson recorded 42 punts of at least 50 yards, and downed 54 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line during his career. Nelson was also a semifinalist for the 2011 Campbell Trophy, which is considered the academic Heisman.
Nelson was a key figure in the Lumberjack lineup that helped reverse the fortunes of the SFA football program. Following a 0-11 season as a rookie, the SFA class of 2011 rallied to post a 25-11 (.694) overall record and win back-to-back conference titles for the first time in program history.
