The Each One Take One Stroll & Roll in Tucson

TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

The Each One Take One Stroll & Roll at Christina-Taylor Green Memorial River Park kicked off at 8:30 a.m. in Tucson on Saturday.

It was co-sponsored by GRIN and The Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation and hosted by Suzi Hileman.

As you'll remember she took 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green to the Safeway and was holding her hand as they were both shot Jan. 8 last year. Saturday, Hileman was grateful for everyone who came to be a part of the event.

"I've made good on the promise I made to myself to take advantage of every single day. It's a blessing that I'm here. It's a miracle that I'm here and people ran out of that grocery store into gunfire to save my life. I can't just walk away from that. I have to do something with that," she said.

And dozens went out to do something, not only to walk, but to bike and even push the kids around in their strollers.

It was an opportunity for people from all walks of life to be together. A lot of them were from Tucson who knew someone involved in the shooting and a lot of them had an even more personal connection.

Tim Donovan's sister was at that Safeway last year. He got a little choked up telling us about what she did.

"She is the woman who grabbed the magazine from the ... from the shooter, from the shooter, prevented him from re-loading," he said.

And the man who treated Gabrielle Giffords in the operating room in the first critical moments after she was shot, Chief of Neurosurgery at the University of Arizona Medical Center Michael Lemole, brought his family. Just another way that today's event showed so much unity. A year later after the tragedy in Tucson, all of these people coming together for one purpose.

"I think this represents the durability of the goodwill that was generated after those events and the support the community garnered," he said.
