Nacogdoches Police have arrested a man accused of stealing a car and wrecking it just a few minutes later.

Chad Alan Carney, 32, of Nacogdoches, is charged with aggravated robbery. He was also booked in on a misdemeanor theft charge.

According to a previous report, police received a call at 10:22 p.m. on January 4 from Sunshine Food Mart, located in the 2000 block of North Street, reporting a vehicle being stolen. Police learned that a 26-year-old woman had parked her vehicle in front of the store and went inside, leaving the vehicle running. That is when she saw a man go into her vehicle.

The woman went outside and tried to open the door but the suspect, later identified as Carney, put the vehicle in gear and struck the woman while backing up, knocking her to the ground, according to the report.

Carney then drove northbound on North Street and struck a 2001 Ford Escape, driven by Jack Curran, 22, of Nacogdoches, who was also northbound on North Street, and a 2004 Nissan Xterra, driven by Martin Cobos, 73, of Nacogdoches, who was also northbound. Carney then hit a utility pole and overturned.

The woman and Cobos were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, while Carney was admitted with serious injuries.

Carney was booked into the jail on Sunday.
