This week, we bring you the first "Pay It Forward" recipient of 2012. We introduce you to Gene Hughes and his wife Pat.
We set up with our Pay It Forward sign along 34th Street near Quaker Avenue awaiting our first playmaker of the year. It only took a minute or two for Gene Hughes and his wife to recognize our sign.
They pull into the parking lot ready to help a local convenient store clerk whom they have known for some time. The Hughes family decided to help out Linda Ramirez who works at a local 7-11 store in Central Lubbock. Gene and Pat Hughes have frequented the store for many years and have come to know Linda through their regular visits to the store. The Hughes family learned that Linda is a single mother with two children.
When they saw our sign, they immediately thought of Linda and decided to surprise her at her workplace. When we arrive, Linda is just about to get off work. Gene and Pat meet her outside and deliver $300 to Linda.
Linda expressed gratitude and gave hugs to Gene and Pat expressing how much she loves them. Gene mentioned that it was a blessing to help someone like Linda. He said that he knows there are many people who could use the help and wishes he can help them all, but is grateful Linda was there to receive the blessing.
