Each Angelina College basketball team had, in the last few days, the opportunity to break out of the holiday routine. The final scores weren't nearly as important as the feeling that both the Roadrunners and Lady Roadrunners would be ready for Wednesday.
The Lady Roadrunners dropped a pair of games at the McLennan Classic in Waco this past weekend, including an overtime thriller on Saturday. The loss dropped AC's record to 7-8 overall – but the important number is the 3-1 in conference play. The Lady Roadrunners closed out December with a pair of impressive league wins over Blinn and San Jacinto Colleges before taking the semester break; on Wednesday, they'll attempt to extend their record by hosting Kilgore at Shands Gym in Lufkin.
Diamond Webb continues to lead AC in scoring at a 14.8 points-per-game clip. The long-range bomber from Houston is shooting just over 30 percent from three-point range to lead the Lady ‘Runners in that category.
Right behind her in scoring average are teammates Brittney Jefferson (13.8) and Carlisha Wyatt (13.7), providing the team with three players averaging double figures in scoring.
AC will take on a Kilgore team still seeking its first win in Region XIV play. Audrea Gamble leads the Lady Rangers (7-5, 0-2) with a 14 points-per-game average.
Game time at Shands Gym is 6 p.m. The team will recognize players from the Pineywoods Community Academy Lady Timberwolves basketball team.
Live audio/video streaming will be available for this game by logging on to www.angelina.edu and clicking on the Athletics link.
The Roadrunners (9-6, 0-3) have experienced a somewhat frustrating run thus far in league competition, dropping each of their three attempts at a win. However, two of AC's last three losses have come by three points; each time, the freshman-loaded team managed to climb back from large deficits and give themselves chances to win at the end. The effort, according to head coach Todd Neighbors, is more than enough to lead him to believe the wins are on the way.
On Wednesday, the Roadrunners travel to Port Arthur to take on defending Region XIV champ Lamar State-Port Arthur, with the Seahawks riding a four-game winning streak in conference play.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
