Several high school area athletes signed letters of intent to play softball at the next level. Softball stars Ashlynn Brown, Kelsey Moulder and Jade Havard signed to junior college softball teams Monday and Tuesday.
Family, friends and teammates gathered to celebrate with Brown Tuesday morning as she signed her intent to play for the Northeast Texas Community College Eagles. Brown's coach Anna Whiddon, a former Big 12 softball player, says it's nice for Brown's teammates to see their leader receive a scholarship.
"Ashlynn is the kid that they look up to every single day at practice, every single day in the weight room or every day on the field, it's always Ashlynn," said Whiddon. "To be able to see their role model succeed it helps them say I guess I can go do it too."
Coach also said it wasn't a matter of talent, but getting colleges to give Brown a chance. Now that Brown will play at the next level she is proud to represent her town and school.
"It's just crazy that I am one of the few that have been able to go on to the next level from Central," said Brown. "There's not very many that go and it is just an awesome feeling to be able to represent my small school."
Brown will actually be roommates with another East Texas athlete, Kelsey Moulder, who signed her letter of intent to NTCC Monday. Moulder's teammate at Hudson, and long time friend, Jade Havard will also be playing college ball at rival Navarro College. All three girls will look to lead their teams to the playoffs in their senior season starting very soon.
