Nacogdoches native Clint Dempsey was named to a huge honor Friday. The U.S. national team player was named 'U.S. Soccer male athlete of the year' in voting of fans, media and U.S. Soccer officials.
"I'd like to thank the fans for voting me athlete of the year," said Dempsey. "It always feels good to be recognized for doing a good job at something you love to do. I'd like to thank my teammates and coaching staff for all their hard work, and hopefully we can have a better 2012."
Dempsey is currently playing in the English Premier League, but his most recent tournament action with the United States national team was impressive. Dempsey scored three goals during the 2011 CONCACAF gold cup.
Dempsey is a two-time winner of this award, he first received the honor in 2007. He joins Landon Donovan, Kasey Keller and Marcelo Balboa as the only multi-year winners of the award.
