Hudson Police chief resigns amid criminal investigation

HUDSON, TX (KTRE) - The Hudson Police chief has resigned from his post amid a criminal investigation.

Hudson Mayor Robert Smith confirmed Jeff Burns turned in his resignation on Friday. He had been on administrative leave for a few weeks, Smith said.

Smith confirmed he was put on leave pending a criminal investigation.

Smith said he could not comment on the investigation, but that any crime being investigated is not connected to the city.

Lt. Jimmy Casper has stepped in as acting chief until the city council determines the next step.

"We talked a little bit about advertising the position, but we're not rushing things at this point," Smith said. "Lt. Casper is fully capable of handling things right now."

Art Bauereiss with the district attorney's office confirmed an criminal investigation is underway, but he could not specify on the allegations.
