TRINITY, TX (KTRE) -

A Lovelady woman is in jail and a Trinity boy is in the hospital after he was hit by a car while coming off a bus in Trinity Tuesday afternoon.

Trinity Police Chief Steve Jones said a ten-year-old boy was coming off a Trinity ISD bus facing southbound on Robb Street. The boy was about to cross four lanes of traffic to go to his house across the street when he was hit by a southbound Mercury Marquis, driven by Teresa Bird, 23.

Jones said the boy was thrown forward and did not go under the vehicle. He said the boy was talking and coherent when he was taken by ambulance to Huntsville Memorial Hospital. The boy underwent tests and has since been released from the hospital.

Police arrested Bird and will charge her with passing a school bus causing injury, a Class A misdemeanor.

Jones said Bird admitted to police that she was on her cellphone, talking to her sister, at the time of the wreck.

A photo from the scene shows books and papers littered over the road after the boy was hit.

Jones explained that all four lanes of traffic going both directions are required to stop by law, for the safety of the children. Jones said the boy was hit right in front of his house.
