LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Louisiana man has pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine after he was caught in an Angelina County traffic stop.

District Judge Paul White has Damirrio Jones, 38, of Jonesboro, La., to submit to a pre-sentencing investigation he pleaded guilty to the possession of a controlled substance.

A highway trooper arrested Jones and his passenger on Dec. 15, 2010, after he found a kilogram of cocaine hidden in the vehicle.

Trooper Heath White said he pulled over a vehicle, driven by Jones, because he was speeding.

White said Jones and his passenger, Ashley Ashaunte McDonald, 28, at the time of arrest, also of Jonesboro, appeared nervous and gave conflicting stories of their travel plans to Houston. White said a background check showed Jones has a criminal history, so he asked for consent to search their vehicle, which was granted.

White said he did an extensive search of the vehicle and found a kilogram of cocaine in the lining of the trunk.

"It took me a while to find it," White said.

White arrested Jones and McDonald on charges of possession of a controlled substance. He said he caught Jones trying to hide a small amount of marijuana in the patrol unit while he was on the way on the jail, so he attached a charge of possession of marijuana to Jones.

Jones, who is represented by Eddie McFarland, turned down a plea bargain and waived the right to a jury trial. The state, represented by Dale Summa, presented the police report as evidence of Jones' guilt.

White did not find Jones guilty Wednesday. White ordered Jones to submit to a PSI. Jones will then be rescheduled for a sentencing hearing once the results of the investigation are released.

McDonald pleaded guilty to the charge in December, accepting a 10-year probation sentence.
