NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches County trooper arrested a woman Saturday morning after he said she was driving intoxicated on pills with a three-year-old passenger in the vehicle.

Trooper Brian Henley said Susan Renee Smallwood, 45, of Nacogdoches, was driving on State Highway 204 and coming from Cushing to Nacogdoches. Someone called dispatch and said a woman was driving erratically around 9:30 a.m. Henley said he stopped her at the intersection of U.S. 59 and U.S. 259.

Henley said Smallwood appeared to be intoxicated. He said she admitted that she had taken Xanax and Hydrocodone but thought she was OK to drive. She said she was taking her three-year-old daughter to the hospital to be treated for cold- and bronchitis-like symptoms, he said.

Henley said he took the child to the hospital and called Child Protective Services to the scene, where they took custody of her. Henley arrested Smallwood on a charge of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger.
