NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches County trooper said he arrested a Shreveport couple Wednesday night after they were driving high on pills with two children in their car.
Trooper John Henley said he received a call of a drunk driver on U.S. 59 South, heading toward Nacogdoches. He pulled over the 2010 Chevy Impala just before the car reached city limits at 7:30 p.m. and said the driver, Shawanna Nichole Hughes, 34, and the passenger, Kareem U. Hughes, 34, were both intoxicated on pills.
Henley said he searched the vehicle and found around 600 pills, including Soma, Xanax, Hydrocodone and others in a bag inside the woman's purse.
Henley said they were coming back from Houston to their home in Shreveport. They were driving with the child passengers, aged 11 and 16 in the car.
He said Child Protective Services was called to the scene and took custody of the children.
The couple was arrested. Kareem Hughes is charged with public intoxication, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a dangerous drug. Shawanna Hughes is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and possession of a dangerous drug.
