NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - There's a bonus for reaching your fifties. More retailers are offering senior discount days. The offered reduced prices are well worth it to retailers too.
Lou Ann Jones loves to shop. She likes a savings even more.
"I love senior discounts. I use them every chance I get," said Jones.
Jones can come back to downtown Nacogdoches tomorrow to receive a 10 % discount from most merchants.
"My friends are senior citizens and they're loyal and long standing customers of mine. I think everyone deserves a little special notice," said local merchant Jane Ann Kendrick.
The restored first Tuesday discount for customers 55 years and older is designed to attract shoppers to main street.
"We had a Preserve America Texas Main Street Program consultant that came in town this summer and they said something we should try to look at was doing some more retail promotion, so we thought this would fall right in line with that," said Main Street manager Sarah O'Brien.
The incentive is popular in the retail business.
Beall's has club 50 plus.
"We signed up over 1,300 new Club 50 members just last year," said manager Mike Mayfield.
What began as a once a month promotion is now offered every Tuesday.
"Which is normally a day of the week that's not very productive as far as sells and now it's many weeks it's our number 3 day of the week," said Mayfield.
Thanks to shoppers like Jones, who keeps track of where the senior discounts are offered.
"Sutherland's, Lowe's, movie theatres, McDonald's almost every day, Chick-Fil-A," said Jones.
Jones likes to be old enough to qualify, but she still hopes she has to ask for the discount.
There's good reason why retailers target senior citizens.
There are about 75 million boomers in the U.S., representing 29 % of the population.
Just search 'senior discounts' and you'll see all the available offers.
