Police stay quiet about Paradise Valley homicide

PARADISE VALLEY, AZ (CBS5) -

It's now been a week since a Paradise Valley couple was found bound and burned in their smoldering home. The vice mayor of Paradise Valley told CBS 5 News police made arrests in connection with the case but investigators are keeping quiet.

Everyone involved in the investigation is remaining very tight-lipped, barely revealing anything about the investigation. But police say they are making progress in the case.

One week after fire crews found the home on fire with two bodies inside, the crime tape is gone and the area is no longer blocked. Instead of police cars and fire trucks, cleanup crews surround this home near 40th Street and Camelback, where a heinous crime took the lives of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro, two loving parents, grandparents, and philanthropists.

At Paradise Valley Police Headquarters, it's quiet, too. While the vice mayor, Mary Hamway, told us she learned of the arrests Friday morning, police aren't confirming that for us.

Instead, they released a statement Monday.  It said:

"After careful consideration, the Paradise Valley Police Department will not be issuing any statements today regarding the Shapiro homicide investigation. Throughout the weekend and today, we have been continuing to follow leads and thoroughly examine pertinent and relative information.

Progress in this case has been and is being made. Because the examination of evidence and facts we know thus far is still ongoing, the decision has been made not to release any further information at this time as it may have the potential to compromise the integrity of the investigation. We do appreciate and thank you for your patience.

Be assured that at the appropriate time, we will notify all media outlets that information will be released."

CBS 5 News asked the Maricopa County Attorney's Office if they've charged anyone in connection with this case, and they sent us this statement: "We are not releasing or confirming any information about this particular investigation right now in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and any subsequent prosecution."

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office conducted the autopsies last week, and while they confirmed the identities of the bodies as Glenna and Lawrence through dental records, on Monday they said the cause of death was still pending.

CBS 5 News have reached out to Paradise Valley Mayor Scott LeMarr and requested an interview, but we have yet to hear back from his office.

There may be a possible link between this murder investigation and one in Phoenix. You may recall we told you about the homicide investigation Phoenix police are conducting involving the murder of Bruce Gaudet; he was a cigar sales representative who was found in a burning condominium near 16th Street and Bethany Home Road with gunshot wounds.

Phoenix police said Monday they are waiting on forensic evidence to determine a link.
