LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Sunday would have been the 18th birthday of a Gilbert teenager who was killed Saturday night while trying to remove an injured deer from Highway 378 in Lexington County.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the 17-year-old Gilbert High School junior was hit by a car around 8:30 p.m. on 378 near Calks Ferry Road. The Lexington County Coroner says William Patrick Corley died at the scene.

Investigators said Patrick was helping another driver, who had hit a deer, remove the injured animal from the road.

The 20-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit Patrick was not injured.

On Sunday, Patrick's friends and family had erected a small memorial near the crash scene.

"Today is his birthday," said Patrick's sister Kimberly Corley. "We should be celebrating that. Instead we're morning the loss of a family member."

"He was an awesome kid." said Kimberly. "He never not got in trouble. He always was so kind to everyone Just like what happened, he stopped to help someone out because that was the kind of kid he is. I'll always miss him."

Patrick's friend, Neil, was with him when he was trying to move the deer.

"He was going to drag deer in the median, try to kill it so it didn't suffer," said Neil. "He was so focused on the deer, he didn't look to see any cars coming."

The accident remains under investigation.
