SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) - San Augustine Police arrested a man Saturday night following an investigation in which he was accused of attacking a woman on a public street and leaving a young child behind in the vehicle.

Chief Jessee Fountain said officers were dispatched to the KK Food Mart on the intersection of U.S. 96 and FM 1277 at 7:59 p.m. in reference to an assault.

According to the report, an officer arrived at the store and found a man, identified as Ray Charles Carroll, 25, with his arms around a woman's neck and holding her against a counter. The officer ordered him to let her go and he did, the report states, and Carroll had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

The officer interviewed a store clerk, who said Carroll stopped his vehicle in the middle of the road and he and the woman got out and he chased her down the road, beating her repeatedly. The clerk said at one point the man was on top of her in the road and hitting her repeatedly.

A further investigation revealed Carroll had left a three-year-old child in the vehicle, so officers filed a charge of abandoning a child, in addition to a charge of aggravated assault.

He was booked into the San Augustine County Jail that night.
