It's called a "Wall of Honor", a designated space on the Shands Gymnasium interior walls where fans can post the names of loved ones victimized by cancer; the wall is part of the upcoming Coaches vs. Cancer Event at Angelina College. Those names may represent strangers to some, but many of them held similar aliases in life: Mom. Dad. Grandma. Grandpa. Brother. Sister. Son. Daughter. Friend.
That wall usually extends most of the way around the inside of the gym, testament to the number of people whose lives are, in some way, touched by cancer. In fact, with the staggering numbers offered by the American Cancer Society regarding the number of cancer victims nationwide, it's hard to imagine finding anyone whose life cancer hasn't touched in some way.
On Wednesday, Angelina College coaches and athletes, along with Brookshire Brothers and Lufkin Coca Cola, will host the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Day, with all four AC teams scheduled to play throughout the day. The Lady Roadrunner softball team and Roadrunner baseball team play Bossier Parish at 3 p.m. at Roadrunner Complex; the Lady Roadrunner basketball team tips off against Jacksonville College at 5:30 p.m. at Shands Gymnasium; and the Roadrunner basketball team faces Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m.
Proceeds generated from the event go to the Lufkin chapter of the American Cancer Society. Over the past few years, this same event has managed to raise thousands of dollars, all of it to help our area residents.
Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to recognize those loved ones who have battled the disease by placing names on the Wall of Honor.
Four games. One cause. Everybody wins.
