San Augustine woman, 2 kids killed in crash

SAN AUGUSTINE, TX (KTRE) -

Three people, including two children, were killed in a Monday evening wreck near Chireno, according to DPS officials.

The sense of loss is fresh in the hallways of San Augustine ISD. Middle-schoolers Anfernee Diggles and Armontay Woods left the school just hours before a car crash ended their lives. Students were greeted by news of tragedy Tuesday morning.

"Several children that were grief-stricken. They had some hard times coping with that, even with our counselors there," said San Augustine Superintendent, Walter Key.

Counselors and ministers spent the day with classmates and teachers to ease the shock. Their grandmother, Annie Jones had picked the boys and their sister up from school Monday afternoon.

According to the DPS report, Jones was driving a 2002 Ford SUV when she left the road and hit a tree on State Highway 21, less than a mile from FM 95. Annie Jones, 54, and Armontay Woods, 12, died at the scene. Anfernee Diggles, 14, died later at a Nacogdoches hospital.

San Augustine Intermediate School principal, Tim Little says he lost two promising students.

"If you were to design a perfect student, from a teacher and administrator's standpoint, Armontay is the kid you would come up with," said Little.

His brother, we're told was just as charming. Key says the crash underscores the need to always be careful.

"Every time you go out in a car or truck and you have young lives with you, you are their care-giver or their life giver," said Key.

DPS reports no one in the vehicle was wearing their seatbelt. Texas state law requires all occupants in a vehicle to wear a seatbelt. That one quick click, authorities tell us, does make a difference.

"Statistics show that more often than not, wearing your seat belt minimizes the injury and helps preserve life," said Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss.

Amauryia Diggles was taken to the hospital from the scene. By Tuesday afternoon, she had already been discharged from the hospital and is now with her grandfather.

Jones' husband, David Jones, confirmed in a telephone interview Tuesday that his wife was the grandmother of all three children.
