LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A Lufkin man trying to move his stalled SUV from traffic was killed Thursday night after being struck by another driver, according to police.

Around 7:24 p.m. Lufkin Police were dispatched to North John Redditt Drive at Old Mill Road, where two vehicles collided in the southbound lane.

Lufkin Police say Saul Moreno-Garcia, 29, of Lufkin was outside, trying to move his Ford Explorer to the median when a witness narrowly missed hitting the SUV. His wife, sister, and four children were still inside the Explorer when a black Dodge pickup hit them, pinning Moreno-Garcia.

Moreno-Garcia was transported by ambulance to Lufkin Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Billy Ball. The other passengers in the SUV were checked out at a hospital and released.

The driver of the truck, 33-year-old Gordon Getro, was also treated then released from a Lufkin hospital. LPD Sergeant David Walker said alcohol is not suspected in the crash and no citations have been issued at this time.

Thursday evening officers remained at the scene marking the pavement at the accident site with spray paint and taking measurements.

The investigation is ongoing and more witness statements are expected to be collected Friday, according to Walker.
