Falls are the leading cause of injury in persons over the age of 65.

Many elderly have a fear of falling. While a fall is embarrassing for a younger person, for an elderly person, it can change their life. Many elderly have a fear of falling. While a fall is embarrassing for a younger person, for an elderly person, it can change their life.

More than 11 million people over age 65 fall each year. Falls can lead to decreased mobility and independence. Forty percent of all nursing home admissions are due to falls.

While having some fear is normal, experts say when the fear of falling interferes with everyday activities, then there's a problem. In fact, when someone is fearful, they tend to reduce their activities, which in turn can make them weaker and increase the risk of doing what they're afraid of… falling.

If you're afraid of falling, have a history of falls, or feel your balance is impaired, talk to your doctor about finding a physical therapist.
