LAFAYETTE, La. – The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team improved to 11-2 (.846) on the season, and 3-0 in Southland Conference play with its victories over Nicholls and Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday afternoon. SFA made quick work of the Colonels, 6-1, and then made the trip to Lafayette where they recorded a 5-1 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns.
SFA only surrendered four points on the weekend, including two against No. 59 Tulane. With the victories SFA extends its win streak to nine matches.
The 'Jacks notched their third conference win of the season with a dominant performance over Nicholls. SFA won the doubles point in impressive fashion surrendering only eight games in the three matches.
Freshmen Malena Gordo provided a dominant performance at No. 6 singles to defeat the Colonels' Marina Ljoshevska, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 singles, while junior Antonia Kolovou posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Andrea Pont Grau at the No. 2 spot to give SFA an insurmountable lead. The Colonels never seriously threatened SFA scoring only one point on the day.
The 'Jacks then faced the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette in a match that would consist of only singles matches. Freshman Julia Lorca gave SFA an early 1-0 lead with her victory at No. 6 singles. Senior Alina Shazhko followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1, victory at No. 2 singles to give SFA another point. That would prove to be the difference in the match as SFA scored the first five points before ULL got on the scoreboard.
SFA returns to action Saturday, Mar. 10th when they will open the 2012 home portion of the schedule with a conference showdown against McNeese State. The match against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 11 a.m. from the Schlief Tennis Complex.
