When Angelina College's Jaylen Daniel banked in an off-balance three pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, Roadrunner fans were buzzing in anticipation of a win in the extra frame.
Those fans left Shands Gymnasium a lot quieter five minutes later.
Coastal Bend held off the Roadrunners in the extra frame, with Cougar Phadarius Taylor scoring six of his team's nine points in overtime to lead his team to a 76-73 win in the play-in game in Lufkin.
The loss ends the Roadrunners' season, while the Cougars advance as the 12th seed in the Region XIV conference tournament scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Taylor finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead all scorers. LaDerrien Williams added 18 points, including an 8-for-10 effort from the free throw line. Two of those freebies came in overtime and gave Coastal Bend a 70-69 lead at the time. Charles Mells, the 7'0" sophomore, grabbed 16 rebounds for the Cougars, who will face the No. 5 seed Blinn College in the tournament's first round.
Mike Myers closed out his brilliant AC career with 19 points and eight rebounds despite playing injured for most of the second half. Myers drew two hard fouls on dunk attempts, both of which sent him crashing to the floor and with the second leaving him in need of taping on his left hand. Daniel and LaDerrien Jackson each added 19 points, and Victor Mbachu finished with 13 points. Jamie Farrie came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds and dole out three assists in 23 minutes of play.
The tenacious Roadrunners, as they have all season long, battled back from nine points down with just over six minutes to play, taking a 61-60 lead on Mbachu's three pointer with 56 seconds to play. Williams hit a bucket for the Cougars with 17 seconds remaining, following that up with a pair of free throws with four ticks left that appeared to seal the win.
But Daniel managed to split a double team at half court, launching a long three from just in front of the Roadrunner bench that banked in at the buzzer and sent the game to an extra five minutes.
There, Taylor managed to finish off the Roadrunners and send the Cougars to their first post-season appearance. Coastal Bend will join Region XIV as full-time members beginning with the 2012-2013 season.
