This time Thursday, the Nacogdoches High School Marching Dragon Band will be in colorful Hawaii.

All 151 members will be there for a week that includes a performance at the U.S.S. Missouri.

Tuesday afternoon, band members gathered for a final rehearsal at the school.

Band president and senior Ricardo Varges is excited about the opportunity.

"It's a different world for all of us. It sounds different. It feels different. It's so cool. An experience you really can't top. Being my senior year, it just feels like a good way to go," Varges said.

Vietnam veteran and retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Johnnie Johnson will accompany the band to read a speech by the late Army General Douglas MacArthur.

"We'll be either along side or on deck of the U.S.S. Missouri where MacArthur accepted Japanese surrender in the end of World War II, so it has great meaning to veterans."

Band members held bake sales, car washes, and rummage sales to raise $300,000 to underwrite the cost of the trip.
