Released by the Rusk County Sheriff's Office:

RUSK COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Rusk County Sheriff's Office Investigation into the shooting which occurred in Rusk County, on Friday, March 2, on US Hwy 259 South, has led to the shooting victim recanting his original story.

The victim originally stated to investigators he was shot by another man while trying to assist a lady in distress. He has now recanted his story admitting he lied to keep the unknown suspect from being arrested. The victim now states the suspect took his gun away from him, shot him and then after shooting him seemed remorseful for shooting him and gave the gun back to him. Investigators found the weapon hid under the backseat of the victim's vehicle.

While the investigation continues Rusk County Investigators will be filing a report with the District Attorney's Office for False Report to Peace Officer, a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed $2,000, confinement in jail not exceed 180 days, or both.

Updates in this case will be released as they become available.
