Allergy Season Is Fast Approaching

by Stuart Burson

A recent study finds that the city of Austin ranks second in the entire country when it comes to the worst allergies. But many allergy sufferers here in East Texas say the pineywoods will give the capital city a run for that title.

If you're one of the thousands of East Texans who suffer from allergies, you can probably already tell that spring is fast approaching. And the ironic thing is, the main culprit for allergies here in the pineywoods is also one of the main staples of our economy.

"This time of year we always see an influx of allergy related symptoms. And the main cause is one of east texas' main strengths... mostly tree pollen. And we haven't even hit our big yellow tree pollen that comes from our major product, pines in East Texas." says respiratory therapist David Henson.

But the good news is that for most of us, allergies can be handled by going to the local drugstore.

"Most of it is small stuff... most of it can be handled with over the counter decongestants and antihistamines. For some, like the chronically ill, they might really need to see their doctor." says Henson.

He also says that allergies that go untreated, could eventually lead to more serious conditions, including pneumonia. So if your allergies are making you miserable even after taking over the counter medication, be sure to see your doctor.
