Pay It Forward: Respite provider gets help with cancer battle

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Margaret Murray always carries little cards with motivational quotes in her pockets. She hands them to strangers with the hopes that they will make an impact.

"A lot of times it says exactly what they need to hear at that moment," said Murray.

Murray is a respite provider to adults with special needs.

For 14 years, she has used tools like theater to bring out the best in people like Vanessa Delgadillo, who has Down syndrome.

"She's shy and Margaret just pulls her out and flips her upside down and makes her a part of the world that we all live in," said Alex Delgadillo, Vanessa Delgadillo's brother.

Alex Delgadillo said his family has known Murray as a lot of things, but now sadly, they know her as something new - a breast cancer patient.

"I'm going through the chemotherapy right now. That's been a little challenging," said Murray.

Alex Delgadillo emailed CBS 5 and nominated Murray for our Pay It Forward story.

We surprised Murray with the $500 as Alex Delgadillo read her the nomination letter.

"With CBS 5's help, we'll introduce Margaret as something new, cancer survivor," Alex Delgadillo said as Murray began crying.

After our interview, we asked Murray to take one of the motivational cards for herself.

It said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

It seems pretty appropriate for Murray.
