New AL bill calls for mandatory counseling before divorce

Posted: Updated:

An Alabama Senate judiciary committee took up a bill that would make it harder for couples to get divorced. It's called the covenant marriage option.

Before getting married, the covenant marriage option would require couples to go to counseling before they could obtain a marriage license.

If a couple wants a divorce, it would require them to go through counseling as well before a divorce can be granted.

Critics of the bill said that this is a government intrusion into marriage.

Three other states have a bill similar to the covenant marriage option on their books. Louisiana passed a covenant law in 1997.
