Venue, rosters set for KTRE Pineywoods Showdown

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The annual KTRE all-star high school basketball game will be held April 19 with the top seniors from Angelina and Nacogdoches counties fighting for bragging rights.

The game will take place at Panther Gym at Lufkin Middle School.

One of the Nacogdoches County teams will attempt to end a three-year losing streak as the Angelina County teams have swept their opponents every year.

The girls game will begin at 6 p.m., with the boys to tip off immediately after. Admission is $5 at the door.

Fans will have a chance to win a new car during halftime of both games.

Fans that are interested in competing may sign up in a drawing before the event. Two fans will be drawn randomly and will have a chance to shoot a layup, free throw, three-pointer and halfcourt shot within 25 seconds. If they make all four shots, they will win a Kia Soul from Perry-Ellis Kia or a Hyundai Sonata from Rex Perry Autoplex.

Those who wish to participate in the shooting contest must not have played college ball within the past five years and have never played professional ball. KTRE will take sign-ups for the drawing prior to the game.

"I feel like there is a little pressure on me, not so much the kids," said Rob Peterson, coach of the Angelina County boys team. "Just because the fact that I have coached this before and I don't want to be that coach that stops the streak and loses to Nacogdoches County."

"I've always watched it growing up, and it is a great honor to be able to play in it now," said Dylan Sandlin of Hudson. "There is some pressure there but I think we can get it done."

"Coming from a small town you don't play with guys this good," said Garrett Wright of Zavalla. "Hopefully I can play with them. It is a privilege. These are the best guys in the county and it is an honor to play with them. Hopefully we can keep the win streak alive."

"It feels good to be representing East Texas the way we are," said Mo Houston of Huntington. "It is going to be kind of different playing with these guys, since we are rivals with Hudson and now we are playing together. But we are working it out."

"It feels really great since I am not going to play basketball in college," said Jada Larue of Lufkin. "So I am really going to enjoy this opportunity."

"Just the kids getting the opportunity to play one more time to play as seniors," said Michelle Brookshire, coach of the Angelina girls team. "Plus they get to play with people that they have played against for years and years. It is a great opportunity. I have seen these kids grow and get better and better each year, now they are coming together and playing one last time. It's just a lot of fun."
