There are over 5000 miles between Nacogdoches, Texas and Alina Shazhko's home in Ukraine. But in order to follow her tennis dreams Shazhko came to East Texas to play for the SFA Ladyjacks.
This season the Ladyjacks have won a school record 14 straight matches in a row and Shazhko says it is thanks to the team coming together this season.
"The unity of the team is great and we work well together because everyone gives their best," said Shazhko. "Because it takes more than one or two people to win a match in tennis, it takes each person giving their best effort and that has made a difference this year."
Alina was named the Southland conference player of the week as she won all four of her singles and doubles matches against Lamar, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and Mcneese State. SFA tennis coach Pat Sullivan explains that Shazhko is not only a great leader on the court, but a perfect student off of it.
"She is proud to be a Lumberjack, she really does a lot for the school and community," said Sullivan. "For your only senior to lead like that is a great example for the younger kids off the court and it's really a good deal."
After Shazhko is finished with tennis she plans to continue to expand her education.
"After I graduate I would like to go to medical school here in the United States," said Shazhko. "The people here are so friendly and I have definitely enjoyed my time here."
You can catch Shazhko Friday March 30th in Nacogdoches against nationally ranked Missouri. Shazhko's skill and brains have earned her the title of Jack of the week.
