The Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office teamed up with US Marshals to check on every sex offender in the county.

Sheriff Thomas Kerss said 10 different teams left around 5:30 a.m. Thursday and checked on about 80 different residences.

Not all the 82 sex offenders on the list were at home.

Some had legitimate reasons. Others just didn't take care of business.

"We've identified close to a half a dozen individuals tat we're seeking warrants for failing to report either an address change or a modification to their address," said Kerss.

Any variance from what was in the file could lead to trouble.

"Are they living where they told us they're living. And are they truly living there or did they just report that address and then maybe they're spending a substantial amount of time staying with someone else. Or are there children's toys present or are there children present if their offender level is such that they're not supposed to be around children," said Kerss.

Deputies were able to serve an arrest warrant on one man, Melvin Liggins, 51, of Nacogdoches, who was not in compliance with requirements as a sex offender. He was booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail on a bond of $250,000.

Kerss said several other sex offenders were not in compliance and deputies would be obtaining warrants for their arrests.

Liggins was convicted in 1979 for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl.

There are all sorts of ways to track sex offenders, including through their DNA.

Some individuals had to provide a DNA sample as it was missing from authorities' files.
