After weeks of enduring offensive struggles, the Angelina College Roadrunners found life in their bats, pounding out 12 runs on 12 hits to blank Laredo College 12-0 Thursday at Roadrunner Field in Lufkin.
Seth Spivey drove in two runs, blasting a solo homer and driving in another run by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded; Dyllan McGregor finished with three singles and a pair of RBI; and Nick Velasquez drove in two more with a pair of singles. C.J. Jarvis drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk.
All this run support was plenty for AC starter Bobby McCormack, who scattered five hits and struck out five in earning the complete-game shutout. McCormack, the Baylor signee, moved his record to 2-5 a misleading number considering the Roadrunners have been shut out in four of his starts. Of the 21 outs recorded by McCormack, just three came via fly balls, testament to his ability to keep the ball down in the strike zone. The ‘Runner defense did its part, with Dyllan McGregor and C.J. Jarvis turning a pair of double plays late in the game to thwart Laredo scoring threats.
For the Palominos (6-22), Adrian Reyes finished with a double and single in three at-bats; and Matthew Garcia added a double in the fifth. Clayton Henicke reached base in all three of his trips to the plate, getting hit twice and singling once.
The teams will play the final two games of the three-game series on Friday beginning at noon. Live audio streaming will be available by logging on to www.angelina.edu and clicking on the Athletics link.
