SFA rallies to even series with Lamar

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Hunter Dozier hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Stephen F. Austin bullpen held Lamar to one run in six innings of relief to erase a 5-1 deficit with a 7-5 win on Friday afternoon at Jaycees Field.

The `Jacks (13-17, 6-8 SLC) outhit the Cardinals (11-18, 4-10 SLC) 11-7, highlighted by Dozier's homerun and multi-hit performances from Max Lamantia, Freddy Villalobos and Ricardo Sanchez. Lamantia finished the day two-for -four with two doubles.

Chase Greening (2-3) picked up the win in relief, surrendering only one runs over four innings. Greening was able to hold Lamar to two hits, fanning four, issuing only one walk on the day.

The Cardinals struck first, scoring a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead open the game. Lamar took advantage of back-to-back doubles from Jud Vidrine and Seth Domak to center field and the right-center gap to get on the board. SFA starter Cody Priest would retire his next two batters faced before surrendering a single to Jeff Abt to plate Dornak.

SFA would scratch one across in the bottom of the frame to cut the Cardinal lead in half. Dozier got his first RBI of the series on a ground ball in the infield to score Rory Myers. Myers leadoff for the `Jacks, reaching on a throwing error from David Harris that ended up in the first base dugout and advance to third on a sac bunt from Villalobos.

The `Jacks would have a chance to tie their next time up, but would strand Lamantia at second after he doubled to right field.

Lamar would add to their lead in the top of the third, scoring one to take a 3-1 advantage. With one out, Brad Picha grounded out to Villalobos to score Vidrine. Vidrine was one of two Cardinals batters to reach base on a free pass from Priest in the inning.

The Cardinals would chase Priest from the game the following inning after a leadoff walk and failed pickoff put a Thomas Henk on second with no outs. From there SFA would turn things over to Chase Greening who after giving up a homerun to Harris, would retire 11 of his next 14 to keep the `jacks within reach.

SFA scratched their way back into the game scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth before taking their first lead of the series in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run shot over left-center wall from Dozier that brought around Villalobos. The Houston native reached base on a single to left field before advancing to second base on a balk from Trimm.

The `Jacks would add one more in the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI single from Rene Moreda to score Lamantia who doubled earlier in the inning.

SFA pitchers Cass Ingvardsen and Alex Moshier would silence Lamar across the final two innings en route to evening the series at 1-1.

The `Jacks will look to take the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Colton Eubanks on the mound, against a Cardinal pitcher to be determined.
