LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin mother is arrested and charged with abandoning her children after she left them at an Easter party with strangers.
The children ages, 4 and seven, were left Sunday around 2 p.m. at a house on the 500 block of Culverhouse in Lufkin.
Lufkin Police said the mother identified as Asia Jones, 29 of Lufkin, left her kids at the party with no intent to return and pick them up.
The Lufkin Police said Jones left the children at a small party with young kids. Witnesses said the saw the mother walk up to the house with the kids and she "shooed" the them towards the house, directing them to go play with the other kids, and left.
Police spoke with the person hosting the party, the woman indicated that Jones left the children and told her she would be back in a few minutes.
The woman told police she really didn't know Jones, but didn't think much about the situation.
Witnesses said several hours had past and the young kids who were at the party had all slowly left, they noticed that Jones's kids were out playing in the road and had made their way down to another residence, that's when neighbors found the children.
According to police the neighbors said the children were dirty and hungry.
Witnesses told police the children had been left alone for nearly four hours, and their mother never returned.
The children's maternal grandmother told police there is an active Child Protective Services investigation involving Jones, to determine if she is an unfit mother. The grandmother was trying to get full custody of her grandchildren.
Police released the children into the grandmother's custody.
She told police that the kids had been living with her and that Jones spent Saturday night with her at her Woodville home, she believes Jones took the children without her permission while she was asleep.
Investigators said Jones has a long history of drug problems.
Police were unable to locate her, after the incident involving her children. She was later found and arrested on Tuesday.
Jones was charged with child abandonment, she was booked into the Angelina County Jail.
