Longtime Nacogdoches SFA Academic Dean, Dr. Bill Parsons, dead at age 81

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - A former academic dean for 40 years at Stephen F. Austin State University has died.

Dr. William (Bill) Parsons, 81, passed away at his home Thursday after a sudden detection of lung cancer.

Just a few weeks ago, Parsons was cast in the starring role of ‘Noah,' the last Lamp Lite Theatre production.  He made all of the rehearsals, but his illness prevented him from performing.  Theatre was just one of Parson's many loves.

He retired as SFA's Dean of the College of Fine Arts and served as pastor for Fairview Methodist Church for 8 years.  Another 5 years were devoted to first United Methodist Church in the same capacity.  Most recently Parsons was extremely active with his church.

Visitation is Saturday from 5 pm to 7 pm at Cason Monk Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches.

Funeral services for Parsons will be Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at First United Methodist Church, located at 201 E. Hospital St. in Nacogdoches, with Dr. Bill Gandin officiating.
