NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches man who authorities say was desperate for a ride got what he wanted, but county jail probably was not the ideal destination.
Sheriff Thomas Kerss said Larry Joe Smith Jr., 32, went to a neighbor's house on County Road 555 around midnight Monday and said he needed a ride because someone was in his house and was trying to rob him at gunpoint.
The neighbor opted instead to call 911, and when deputies arrived they learned that nobody was trying to rob Smith. Smith told deputies he was actually out of gas and just wanted a ride, Kerss said.
"He got a ride all right," Kerss said.
A ride to the Nacogdoches County Jail, where he was booked for false report of an emergency, a state-jail felony.
Smith has several convictions on his record, including drug and burglary charges.
