The Angelina College Cheer Squad is looking for new members to perform for the 2012-2013 season, with the auditions taking place from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 28th at Angelina College.
The young women and men making up the Cheer Squad receive scholarship money in the amount of $600 per semester as well as a physical education credit while attending Angelina College. In all, there are 12 spots for cheerleaders and a mascot.
Director Lisa Griffin said experience in cheerleading and tumbling is helpful but not required.
"It would be amazing if they knew how to tumble, but it's not necessary," Griffin said. "The ‘cheer' part can be learned and being a cheerleader is cooler than they might think.
"I would also encourage some of the male athletes from the local schools who will be attending AC to consider trying their strength in another forum: stunting, lifting and learning about cheering, staying in shape and gaining partial scholarship to help with their college tuition."
The AC Cheer Squad performs routines for Angelina College athletics events; the group also performs at least two community service events each semester, events such as the Hushpuppy Olympics and various Junior League of Lufkin projects.
Applications are due in the office of Student Services by 4:00 PM Wednesday, April 25th. Applications and audition instructions are located on the Angelina College web site; just click on the Athletics link and open the Cheer Squad page.
